The Times They Are A Changing

The Times They Are A Changing.

History shows that before the world became a” Global Village” nations rose up against injustice. The elite in many nations across the world where overthrown as the ordinary people could no longer tolerate injustice and inequality. In the experience of the Human race, about once in every three generations a social convulsion has occurred; and probably such catastrophes must continue to occur in order that laws and institutions may be adapted to physical growth. Human society is a living organism, working mechanically, like any other organism. It has members, a circulation, a nervous system, and a sort of skin or envelope, consisting of its laws and institutions. This skin, or envelope, however, does not expand automatically, as it would had Providence intended humanity to be peaceful, but is only fitted to new conditions by those painful and conscious efforts which we call revolutions. Usually these revolutions are warlike, but sometimes they are benign. Are we at a point where we are about to witness this on a global scale.? The question is in what form will this revolution take place and what will the role of technology and the the ability to communicate on such a massive scale play ?

THE GREEN INDEX REPORT

In 9 days from today the COP17 conference will be held in Durban South Africa. One cant help but be both cynical and sceptical as to what motivates this gathering and the outcome.

The COP serves as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, which also adopts decisions and resolutions on the implementation of its provisions. The Protocol was initially adopted on 11 December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, and entered into force on 16 February 2005. As of September 2011, 191 states have signed and ratified the protocol. The only remaining signatory not to have ratified the protocol is the United States. Other states yet to ratify Kyoto include Afghanistan, Andorra and South Sudan, after Somalia ratified the protocol on 26 July 2010.

The link below is a explanation of the Kyoto Protocol

http://unfccc.int/kyoto_protocol/items/2830.php

We hope that out of this meeting something positive will be derived and the nations of the world including the USA will begin to understand that we are heading for very serious trouble unless a concerted effort is made to not only adhere to the Protocol but also to improve and enforce the decisions that are made.If not which will probably be the case we will continue to slide toward the inevitable disaster that the planet is facing. It is also a interesting fact that South Africa as the host nation ranks 13th according to the Wikipedia article below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions

These facts serve to highlight the responsibility we have toward forcing change through our own actions and the way we live our daily lives. There are some simple changes we can make to the way we live that will make a difference.

Below is a link with some tips on reducing your carbon foot print.

Education And The Need To Re-Educate..

I was having a discussion with a friend this week about the plight of the Planet. I have always been of the view that Earth has nothing to fear from its human population as it is too powerful and self-repairing to be threatened by Humanity. The Earth has rid and repaired itself over and over again in the billions of years of its existence.

The generally accepted age for the Earth and the rest of the solar system is about 4.55 billion years (plus or minus about 1%). This value is derived from several different lines of evidence.

Unfortunately, the age cannot be computed directly from material that is solely from the Earth. There is evidence that energy from the Earth’s accumulation caused the surface to be molten. Further, the processes of erosion and crustal recycling have apparently destroyed the entire earliest surface.

The oldest rocks which have been found so far (on the Earth) date to about 3.8 to 3.9 billion years ago (by several radiometric dating methods). Some of these rocks are sedimentary, and include minerals which are themselves as old as 4.1 to 4.2 billion years. Rocks of this age are relatively rare, however rocks that are at least 3.5 billion years in age have been found on North America, Greenland, Australia, Africa, and Asia.

While these values do not compute an age for the Earth, they do establish a lower limit (the Earth must be at least as old as any formation on it). This lower limit is at least concordant with the independently derived figure of 4.55 billion years for the Earth’s actual age.

If we look at it from this point of view and that the Earth has evolved over billions of years taking many forms then we have played and will play a very insignificant role in its existence. We have been around for about 0.000001% of the life of this planet. The Earth has seen and survived many catastrophes and changes and continues to exist. The reality then is that we have to save Humanity from itself. We as residents of this Planet have to take a decision as to whether we want to extend our stay or be part of our own destruction. The Earth will be here long after we have come and gone.

The other side of the coin is what Humanity will leave behind. What will our legacy be to the existence of the Universe? Will Earth be turned into a lifeless waste land or will the forces of nature act to rid itself of the scourge that Humanity has become. The natural world is a living organism and its many facets both compliment and rely on each other. All things have a purpose and a place in the cogs of this living mechanism. On cannot be without the other as both would cease to exist. Humanity in what we have come to call development and civilization has lost site of this balance. Our period of occupation of this Planet is destined to be a period of desolation to future intelligence. It is an interesting fact that because of our destruction of the natural balance their will be very little evidence of our existence with the exception of Radio-active waste. We have so destroyed the ecological balance that it is unlikely that fossil evidence will exist of this time.

What then is the way forward? We have been presented with a massive opportunity with the spread of technology and the ability to communicate so effectively across such distances to re-educate ourselves and our children. Humanity needs to re-think and recreate its role on this planet. We need to work toward a revolution in the way we conduct our very existence. Education and re-education is the key in creating a new consciousness from where we can repair the damage created from the consciousness of the past.

The current world wide education system is based on the industrial model, which emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, aimed to improve efficiency and to prepare young people for factory jobs requiring repetitive tasks. As a consequence, intended or not, the industrial model tended to preserve the status quo. The industrial model was further characterized by strict rules and regimented behavior, identical curricula and expectations for all students, and an emphasis on basic skills of literacy and numeracy.” This system cemented and continues too the class structure that has come to define the modern world. Those born into privilege positions continue to dominate the wealth of the world. Success is based on the accumulation of material wealth and with it comes privilege.

It can also be argued that this regimented manner of education resulted in the mess we find ourselves in today. People where not taught to think for themselves as this would have resulted in the failure of the capitalist mass production. Through a combination of religious dogma, social expectations and creative suicide people have become a mass of left brained slaves to the system. I believe that the biggest loser of all in this mass education, production and reward based society has been our consciousness. The vast majority of modern human beings are willing to sacrifice everything of real value to attain material gain.

Our role models have become those who David Rothkopf in his book “Super Class’ identifies as the as people who control the world through wealth and political influence. Whilst he does not name the 6000 people whom he claims make up this list many of them are world leaders, industrialist and those who exert immense influence over the lives of the rest of the worlds population. One thing that is obvious that for those who make up this Supper Class together with the 1% who control 40% of the worlds wealth there is no benefit in change as this would erode their wealth and power.

The end result is that we continue to extort from the poor in the form of slave labor and from the earth resources that are unequally shared. The Earth needs a world wide revolution in the way we think, the structure of the worlds economy, wealth distribution, use of its resources and political systems as these have failed and are failing. Technology has the ability if handled responsible to influence those who are enslaved within the systems. I believe that the only way that we as a species can save ourselves is to re-think the distribution of resources. If there is such a massive gap between the social classes then surely part of reducing the strain on the Planet and its resources would be to consider redistributing its resources. If this was done it would ease the pressure and result in systems that could address inequality and strains on our natural resources.

The point then is that the future of the Planet lies in the re-education of the under-class or the masses that make up the majority and only through creating an awareness of their exploitation by the “Super Class” and its sub-classes can things begin to change for the betterment of all.
